When Ann’s children became old enough to fend for themselves, Ann went to work as a guidance counselor at Utica Free Academy. Despite losing their mom to the lions, tigers, and bears, Ann’s children enjoyed mom’s Zoo Lady stint, particularly when the stray cockatoo or squirrel monkey spent the night in the Allen kitchen. ![]() Her children thought that the telephone cord was her third arm. She spent her days organizing, advocating, negotiating, fundraising, and childrearing. Maybe because a house with four kids under age six was such a zoo, Ann morphed into the “Zoo Lady.” She helped found the Utica Zoological Society in 1964, serving as its president for four years. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1955, married, and immediately produced four children in rapid succession. She was born in Utica in 1933 to Marion and Francisco Penberthy.
